Event Location: Steel Blue Oval

Event Description:

COUNT ON THE SWANS!

Round 15 - Count Me In Round - Swan Districts Vs. East Perth

Saturday 14 July 2018, the club will host their annual Count Me In Day at Steel Blue Oval - an event that celebrates people with disability and promotes community inclusion.

Inspired by community members’ compelling accounts of triumph over the tragedies, which for many were the cause of their disability, Swan Districts has invited Shaun Pianta, Darren Taylor and Mark le Flohic, OAM, to be the keynote speakers for the Count Me In Round Legends Luncheon. Each will share their struggles with disability and how they overcame them to achieve phenomenal success in para-athletics.

Pianta is a B2 classified visually impaired Para-alpine skier from Collie. Despite having only taken up the sport in 2012 after a superbug virus attacked his optical nerve leaving him with only 15% vision a few years prior, Pianta was selected to represent Australia at the 2018 Winter Paralympics. He also competed in the 2017 World Para-alpine Skiing Europa Cup in VeysonnazSwitzerland with a guide and a won silver medals in the men’s vision impaired super-G and giant slalom.

Le Flohic is a Paralympic cyclist from Perth who won a gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Games in the Mixed Bicycle Time Trial CP Div 4 event and a bronze medal in the Mixed Tricycle 1.9 km Time Trial CP Div 2 event. He also won gold at the 2004 Athens Games in the Men's Tricycle Road Race CP Div 1/2 event and silver in the Men's Tricycle Time Trial CP Div 1/2 event. Le Flohic was one of only two Western Australian Institute of Sports athletes selected for the Australian cycling team to compete in the 2008 Beijing Games. However, a broken collarbone sustained during training forced him to withdraw from the Games.

Taylor was one of twelve riders who undertook The Great Bike Hike as a peloton in 2012 to advocate for inclusive communities.  A 2,500km bicycle ride from Perth to Broome, Taylor and his peers departed from Steel Blue Oval and passed through New Norcia, Moora, Coorow, Three Springs and Dongara before completing the Bike Hike in Broome just under a month later.

Swan Districts has allocated the coveted 1.35pm pre-league timeslot to the High Wycombe Vs. Coolbinia Integrated Football match. A fervent supporter of Integrated Football, on the 17th of May, the club hosted a WAAFL State Integrated training session at Steel Blue Oval where great camaraderie was formed as the Integrated players trained alongside our league team and joined them for a meal afterwards. The WAAFL can Count on the Swans for continued assistance with player development and our advocacy of integrated football.

The Swans Count Me In Day will also feature a VIP area for people with disability, their carers, families and friends. Disabled individuals and their guests can enjoy uninterrupted views of the match and a free soft drink and sausage sizzle lunch provided by community partner, Atwork Australia. There will be performances by dancers with disability, a wheelchair obstacle course race at half time and post-game entertainment by Catch Music, who will play two sets upstairs in the main bar. Count Me In attendees can Count on the Swans to put on a great match day!

In early 2018, Swan formed the aptly named DIAS (Disability Inclusion & Advocacy Sub-committee) as a platform for the club to advocate for greater acceptance, inclusion and accessibility to community activities and sporting events for disabled people. The driving force behind much of the Count Me In preparations, DIAS members meet monthly to conceive and execute strategies that will create opportunities for those living with disability and empower them to realise their dreams.

Citizens with disability can Count on the Swans to foster a culture of safety, acceptance and belonging in the club, on the field and amongst the wider Swan community.

Swan Districts invites everyone to join them for their Count Me In Day festivities. Seats are still available for the Legends Luncheon, which includes VIP parking, ground entry, buffet lunch, esteemed keynote speakers, VIP seating to watch the game and post-match celebrations.
