About Pilbara Events
The Pilbara, in the North West of Western Australia is surrounded by the Indian Ocean to the west and the Northern Territory border to the east. It is laden with an immense reserve of minerals and natural resources, with the two top export revenue earners for the state (iron ore and liquefied natural gas) supplied from this region. The Pilbara region comprises over 507,000 square kilometers and is blessed with stunning, unique beauty boasting striking landscapes, as well as a rich and diverse cultural heritage.
With a population of approximately 50,000 (about 2% of the total population of Australia), the majority of the residents live in the Western third (including Port Hedland and Karratha), with the entire region broken down into four local government areas – Ashburton, East Pilbara, Port Hedland and Roebourne. Over 5,700 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people live in the Pilbara, with a number of aboriginal communities dispersed throughout the region.
The cultural, economic and environmental diversity of the Pilbara region provides all residents and visitors with a relaxed and rewarding lifestyle with a vast arrange of recreational and social activities and opportunities - across the Pilbara alone there are more than 500 sporting, recreation and community organisations. Sport and recreation plays an integral role in the lifestyle provided in the Pilbara, enhancing the quality of life for all participants.
According to the Department of Regional Development and Lands (2011), the state of WA is anticipating growth of over 40% in the next 40 years, converting a population growth of over 500,000 people living in regional WA. As the North West of the state houses the hubs of many major industries (predominantly iron ore, liquefied natural gas and agriculture), it is natural to expect rapid growth in these areas, and local, state and federal government agencies are working hard to ensure the services within these areas will have the capacity to cope with this expansion. Community Development, including access to recreational facilities and opportunities is obviously a high priority; with football one of the fastest growing sports in the industry, the opportunities for talent identification, social development, and pathway progression is tremendous.
