About

Port Hedland is a dynamic town of over 20,000 people located in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia. The original inhabitants, the Karriyarra people, call the place Marapikurrinya for the hand shaped formation of the tidal creeks coming off the natural harbour.   Port Hedland boasts one of the world’s largest Port in tonnage terms, with over 70 million tonnes of product worth more than $3 billion shipped each year.

The lifestyle is relaxed and open. The Town’s location on the ocean provides for a variety of aquatic leisure activities including superb fishing. Whales and nesting flatback turtles can be seen in season. Millstream and Karijini National Parks are within easy driving distance, while Broome and the Kimberley are also within reach.

The two main residential centres are Port Hedland and South Hedland, each having a range of services including community services, cultural services, recreation and shopping facilities.  The communities of Warralong and Yandeyarra also fall within the boundaries of the Local Government boundary of Port Hedland, with the V Swans very active within these areas.

The Hedland region covers Port and South Hedland and also includes communities including Warralong and Yandeyarra. Staff in the Hedland region also support the Kicking and Shooting Goals Programs administratively at Newman Senior High School. The demographic of the region is so broad which enables V Swans to continue to run successful programs in this region that are  particularly suited to individual group needs.

In the Hedland Region V Swans run programs which include:

Shooting Goals - A program that is run at both Hedland Senior High School and Newman Senior High School. The program is a netball based incentive program that is designed to engage students, encourage participation and increase attendance rates at school.

Kicking Goals - An AFL based incentive program that is run in partnership with V Swans, BHP Billiton Iron Ore and the West Coast Eagles Football Club. This program runs both at Hedland Senior High School and Newman Senior High School. The program is an incentive based program that is designed to engage students, encourage participation and increase attendance rates at school.

Yandeyarra Mentoring Program - A engagement and participation program that is designed to engage senior school students at Yandeyarra Remote Community School. Through regular visits and sessions with students V Swans aim to increase self-esteem and self-confidence in individuals to achieve and strive for their goals.
