Swans defeat Perth

Swan Districts - 15.13 - 103 def Perth - 9.5 - 59

The colts’ completed the double, winning back to back premierships after demolishing Perth by 54 points at Subiaco Oval on Sunday morning. It was sweet revenge for the Swans after being narrowly beaten by Perth in the first week of the finals. The slip-up did little to dampen the spirit of the boys as they bounced back to beat West Perth and then went on to claim football’s ultimate prize on Sunday. The win was lead by small forward Frank Quartermaine and backman Jamie Bennell who was instrumental in defense.

Just like the crowd the Swans took a little while to warm up as it was Perth who looked the better side in the first ten minutes. Perth midfielder Aaron Elari kicked the game’s first and they were unlucky not to get another as a quick snap thundered into the post. But great defensive pressure from the Swan’s Jamie Bennell helped stem the flow as the boys started to warm to the task. The dynamic duo of Frank Quartermaine and Lance Daly kicked into action and the Swans were off and running.

The Swans had their chances early in the second term but once again it was Perth who drew first blood. From there it was all one way traffic as the Swans hit back with goals to Adam McKinlay and Daly. Perth kept in touch with a goal to Hayden King but frustration was starting to show as they gave away two 50 metre penalties in quick succession. One resulted in an easy goal to the Swans Michael Walters and the lead was out to 18 points at the main break.

The Swans extended their lead in the third term as they kicked six goals to Perth’s one. The black and white got the all important first goal through Clint Garlett and a free-kick off the ball soon after led to Quartermaine’s second. Perth added a much needed goal but the Swans hit back with goals to Neville Jetta and Rod Manton. Quartermaine then provided the highlight of the term, kicking his third with a mid-air strike that would’ve impressed Socceroos striker Tim Cahill. A late goal to Daly extended the margin to a game high of 54 points at three-quarter time.

Perth kicked the first major of the last term but it was too little too late for the Demons. Quartermaine added two goals as the highlights continued with a great leap and mark from Simon Parry on the wing. Not even heavy rain could take the sting out of the game as the players continued to show great skill. After braving the conditions all morning the Swans supporters sang the song loud and clear as the boys celebrated a well deserved victory.
