Dream come true for Gault

SOME tremendous hard work over the past 12 months paid off for Swan Districts ruckman Corey Gault when Collingwood selected him at pick No. 65 in the NAB AFL Draft on Thursday.
The 19-year-old 198cm ruckman was delighted to be picked up by Collingwood as well and said that if he could have gone anywhere that staying home with West Coast or Fremantle, then it would have been with the Magpies.
Gault had a tremendous 2011 season starting with some outstanding form in the colts that saw him take part in the WA State 18s carnival and stepped up into senior football with some dominant reserves form, and then his league debut late in the season. He had been rewarded by winning the Swan Districts Colts E.J. McManus Fairest and Best award for 2011.
For the draft on Thursday, Gault was hopeful but not overly confident about being drafted, but when Collingwood selected him he couldn’t have been happier.
"It's hard to explain the feeling really. It's a mix of happiness really and then my dreams coming true," Gault said.
"I was just home with my mum and a close mate. It was a pretty quiet day because my brother was at work and sister was at camp, but once I got drafted it wouldn’t have mattered where I was. That's all I was hoping for."
Now that he knows he is officially an AFL-listed player, Gault is slowly letting it sink in that he will be flying over to Melbourne to join Collingwood over the weekend, and it's just about the best possible outcome for him apart from getting to stay home in WA.
"It is gradually sinking in I think. It has been one of my dreams to be drafted into the AFL system and now for that to come true is an unbelievable feeling. I obviously still have a long way to go and this is only the start of things, but it's pretty exciting to have my foot in the door," he said.
"I guess apart from staying home with either the Eagles or Dockers, going to Collingwood would have been my next choice so I couldn’t be happier. It's such a great and successful club, and I can't wait to get over there.
"It's a little bit daunting thinking about walking in there for the first time, but I'm sure it will be fine. I will just try to treat it like any other footy club and take it as it comes when I get there. It's pretty exciting more than anything."
Heading into the draft on Thursday, Gault was trying not to get his hopes up too much, but when it got to pick 65 to see his name come up was a dream come true.
"I thought it was probably a 50-50 chance going into it. I hadn’t been contacted by any clubs saying that they would definitely draft me, so I thought that I would either be just in or just out of the draft," he said.
"I was certainly hopeful, though, but as it went on I wasn’t quite sure and when it got into the 60s I thought I might have missed out, but then when I got selected I couldn’t have been happier."
It was 12 months ago when Gault was invited to join in with the Swan Districts' league side pre-season last year that he felt that he might be able to have a real big crack at making football his career.
From then on, the 2011 season at colts, reserves and league level all went tremendously well as he showed his ability to not only do well in the ruck hit outs, but also by winning the ball around the ground.
"Really when I was asked to do a league pre-season was when I started to really think about where I could go with my footy. It is just the tier below the AFL so I thought I would give it a real big shot to take the next step up," he said.
"Then I started to play some good footy with the colts and that led into me getting the chance to play state footy, and from there obviously that led into the ressies and league teams at the end of the year."
Gault is also appreciative of all the help he has received from everyone involved at the Swan Districts Football Club, especially ruck coach Percy Johnson, league coach Greg Harding and colts coach Adrian Hickmott.
"Percy has been such a big help to me. He has been positive with me, but firm as well with what I need to work. Then Greg Harding and Adrian Hickmott, and all the other coaches at the club have just been amazing," Gault said.
"They haven’t been bothered by me wanting to stay back to do some extra work after training or if I want to come in to do some extra sessions on a Tuesday, so I can't thank them enough."
