Jetta and Jacky two of Harding's shining lights
Tuesday, 1st November 2011
GRAHAM Jetta and Jarrhan Jacky were two Swan Districts players that worked tirelessly throughout 2011 for the black-and-whites and now coach Greg Harding hopes to again have them as key contributors next year unless they end up in the AFL system.
In a season where Swans were under the pump more often than not, Jetta and Jacky both had to play roles all over the field and did so with aplomb to ensure they were Swan Medal contenders just behind eventual winner Tallan Ames.
Jetta continued his emergence as a player after originally arriving at the club from Bunbury as a specialist forward pocket.
After an indifferent first season where he ended up seeing younger brother Lewis drafted into the AFL to join the Sydney Swans, Graham transformed his body into a lean, athletic machine coming into the 2010 premiership season and he became a star running off half-back.
He continued his form right on into 2011 as well earning a spot in the WA team that played and beat Queensland in the State game, and he even finished the season spending time in the middle allowing him to showcase his pace, skill and ability to win the ball.
Harding has been tremendously impressed with the continued improvement he has made and hopes for his sake he gets an AFL opportunity, but selfishly would love him still at Steel Blue Oval.
I thought that Jetts really got going late in terms of his ability to run and carry the footy. I've always been a massive fan of Jetts and his ability to have great composure and counterattack, and he really showed that late in the season especially even in the last game against Perth.
Harding said.
We were really battling after half-time and he almost single-handedly kept us in the game and gave us the lead at three quarter-time with his ability to win one-on-one contests and get it going the other way. I've always been a massive fan of Jetts.
He lost 20 kilos and has now had two really good seasons in a row. I think he could play AFL footy and it would be great to see how he would come up in terms of endurance with a full-time program under his belt to see just how good he could be. I hope he gets that opportunity because he deserves it and he's a great kid.
Jacky arrived at Swan Districts coming into 2011 after being with the Adelaide Crows and it took him some time to get him into the shape that Harding knew he needed to be to contribute strongly.
However, early in the season once he found his feet he quickly became one of Swans' most important and versatile players throughout 2011.
He was able to play a role as a small forward at times and kicked 12 goals, he provided some drive and rebound from defence and also win the ball, and run and carry it through the middle. Harding was clearly impressed with how hard he worked to end up being such a strong contributor.
Jacky started with skin folds of 98 I think in the pre-season when he came to us, and he had some hamstring issues based around a really big workload. He finished at about 56 which meant he lost 45 per cent of his skin folds so that shows how professional he was," Harding said.
He had to nurse his way through because of the hamstring issues, but he did a great job and is very professional. He had a great year based on the fact of where he came from physically, and also where we played him. When some things went wrong for us and we were searching for some midfield drive we played him through the midfield.
If we were struggling for a small forward who could go front and square, and kick a goal and put pressure on then we went to Jarrhan. If we needed someone to go back to give us run and carry, he went to half-back.
It's very hard as a player to have continuity in your season and to gain confidence when you are thrown around like that, but he ended up averaging 21 or 22 possessions a game in all three positions and he was a genuine competitor in a year where at times the team was uncompetitive.
