Newman aims for Eagles' small forward role

MURRAY Newman proved himself of being able to play quality WAFL league football throughout
the second half of 2011 and now he hopes to be given the same opportunities in the AFL after being
drafted by the West Coast Eagles with pick No. 23 in the NAB AFL Draft.
Newman earned his league debut with Swan Districts in Round 9 of the 2011 season and when he
returned in Round 17, he remained there for the rest of the season and put in some outstanding
performances.
That included 17 possessions in Round 17, 13 disposals and two goals in Round 18, 14 and three
goals in Round 21 and a career-high 21 touches in Round 24 against Perth as well.
While lightly built, the highly-skilled and quick 18-year-old who is clever around goals but also more
than capable further up the ground has some developing in his body still to do, he could just the
small forward that West Coast is looking for in 2012 and beyond.
That's certainly where he hopes to begin his AFL career anyway before working his way further up
the field.
"I think I'm a small forward that can go into the middle every now and then. If I work on my tank I
definitely think that I can progress into the midfield at some point as well," Newman said."My goal is to play as soon as possible and I'd like to put on a bit of weight and develop my body a
bit more as well."
Newman is delighted to not only be staying at home in Perth, but to be picked up by the Eagles.
Especially to now be reuniting with Nic Naitanui and fellow draftee Fraser McInnes.
"It's just starting to hit me now. It's a dream come true and a great feeling to be drafted by the West
Coast Eagles," Newman said."When I thought I might be a chance to get picked up, my No. 1 goal was to stay in Perth and then
if I had to pick a team it would be the Eagles because I reckon they're up and coming, and they are
going to be very successful in the next few years."I've been talking to Nic a bit lately and it's great to be on the same team as him now here at the
Eagles. I also went to school for a bit with Fraser and we played together, so to team up with him
again is great too."
