V Swans, the community and game development arm of Swan Districts Football Club swept the pool at the 2011 Western Australian Sport and Recreation Industry Awards held last Friday evening.

Welcomed by the Hon Terry Waldron MLA, the awards night attracted strong industry representation from organisations such as the West Australian Football Commission, Swimming WA, West Australian Cricket Association, Surfing WA, Football WA, Seniors Recreation Council WA and many more. The Swan Districts Football Club had some strong competitors.

The highlight of the evening was a surprise for the Swan Districts Football Club as they were announced winners of the coveted $10,000 Minister’s Award for Industry Excellence. Announced by Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron to the most outstanding finalist from the award categories – in short, ‘the best of the best’.

“The club has shown outstanding leadership and innovation by providing programs in regional communities such as Onslow and Port Hedland that have attracted participants from all age groups, both male and female.” He said

“Its partnerships with local and corporate organisations have achieved outstanding outcomes for the education, health and wellbeing of the participants in these regions.”

Swan Districts Football Club President, Peter Harvey and General Manager of V Swans, Nicole Graves accepted this major award modestly. Graves was speechless for words at first, but went on to make an inspiring speech that captivated the audience.

‘We are just so proud and humbled to have been acknowledged in this way, particularly when there are just so many organisations and volunteers delivering fantastic programs in WA”.

We had hoped one or two of our programs may have been noticed by the judges however to get all three nominations as finalists awards and then to take out the Regional Participation award for the Shooting Goals program was just brilliant. “ she said.

Graves also states that they didn’t even consider they would be in the running for the Industry Excellence award and took a moment to recognise the major partners that help drive community development.

“Our surprise is genuine and a true reward for our team working tirelessly throughout regional and metropolitan WA.”

“It is a credit to the Swan Districts Football Club & associated partners for supporting the vision to go beyond football and deliver what are now award winning community based programs.

“I'd like to take this opportunity to thank our major program providers BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Chevron Australia and the Department of Education Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) for their ongoing support. Corporate support has been vital in the delivery of these regional and remote healthy lifestyle and sports programs; it has definitely taken the burden off many not for profit sporting and health & community organisations and continues to drive us to achieve more for our communities."

Swan Districts were named finalists in all three categories that they were nominated in and won one of those.

Provision of Sport and Recreation to Regional WA - Winner

V Swans Shooting Goals Program was recognised for its efforts in Port Hedland where it was identified the need for more females to be engaged in sports specialist programming. It became the sister program to the successful Kicking Goals Program (Australian Rules Football). The Shooting Goals program is a unique partnership between Hedland Senior High School, Swan Districts Football Club and BHP Billiton Iron Ore and works closely with the Port Hedland Netball Association and the North West Netball Region. The program instant success was recognised on the night and awarded as the winner of the Provision of Sport and Recreation to Regional WA.

Commitment to Participation - Finalist

Recognised the work of V Swans who were engaged by Chevron Australia to provide a sustainable community development program in the remote regional community of Onslow as part of their community engagement program. Following their strong community consultation, the Chevron V Swans Active Program was created for the community. Over the past year V Swans Active has grown the community based sport and recreation from zero to substantial, seeing community members of all ages participating in some regular activity each week and many young people participating up to three to 5 times a week.

Community Event Award - Finalist

V Swans, together with festival partners Swan Districts Football Club, BHP Billiton Iron Ore and DEEWR among others provided residents in the Pilbara an opportunity to be involved in a unique and engaging festival by developing, managing and successfully delivering the inaugural Karratha Festival held late July this year. The event encompassed sport and recreation, community development and educational activities within the one festival and included activities such as football games, community sessions, educational shows and various other VIP functions. The social benefits to the wider community were immediately evident and these effects are still impacting on the participation rate of demographics involved.
