With cricket and rugby developing smaller and shorter versions of their game, the AFL and the Western Australian Football Commission are currently trialling a brand new competition format in the Swan Valley on a Friday night under lights. The AFL 9’s Swan Valley Cup is a competition which sees nine players take the field at any one time and consists of three forwards, three centres and three backs playing in two 20 minute halves.
“AFL 9’s is a fast paced game which can be played on football grounds, soccer pitches, beaches and local parks and the 9 per side concept makes for an exciting game which is focused on maximum fun and maximum participation,” WAFC Swan Districts manager Isaac Stewart said. “The AFL 9’s SwanValley Cup has been a big success for the Swans District Football Development Council (SDFDC) with some 100 kids from Chittering JFC, High Wycombe JFC, Kalamunda JFC, Swan View JFC and Upper Swan JFC playing under lights at Baskerville Oval since September.”
The competition runs every Friday until December 2 and games start at 6pm with the last game commencing at 8pm at Baskerville Oval. Mr Stewart said the support for the new format has been well received by teams in thecommunity and is looking to build the competition to become a regular fixture.
“Despite being piloted in the Swan Districts for the very first time, the support from the junior clubs has been magnificent with more than 10 teams nominating to play in the AFL 9’s Swan Valley Cup,” he said. “The AFL 9’s Swan Valley Cup wouldn’t have been possible had it not been for the dedicated volunteers at the disposal of Upper Swan JFC and we have no doubt the competition will be bigger and better in 2012,” he said.
