More than 30 Indigenous boys, aged 13 to 18, from the suburbs of Midland, Middle Swan, Midvale, Stratton and Swan View have successfully reconnected with junior community clubs in the Swans District, following the completion of the V Swans Maali Academy. The 10 week program was delivered by V Swans, in collaboration with the Swans District Football Development Council (SDFDC), Healthway, the City of Swan, Midland PCYC and Outcare.
Swans District Manager, Isaac Stewart said V Swans Program Managers, Peter Matera and Danny Penny delivered key educational messages to the teenage boys in relation to drug, alcohol and crime awareness, nutrition, goal setting, self-esteem, and respect for women. “The Maali Academy has boosted Indigenous participation in junior football, decreased the incidence of alcohol and drug-related crime, enhanced nutritional awareness and has improved the respect for women in the community,” said Stewart. “The program has given these boys skills for life, not just for playing football,” said Matera.
After kicking goals with the Maali Academy, V Swans has put the finishing touches on its next program, the Yorga’s Academy. The Yorga’s Academy, which is being held at Midland PCYC, is for Indigenous girls, aged 9 to 18. The program, which is being supported by Chevron, Office of Crime Prevention and PCYC, seeks to develop Indigenous girls as positive role models and tackle several issues such as drug, alcohol and crime awareness, cultural perception, sexual health, and self-respect.
The 8 week program will be supervised by V Swans General Manager, Nicole Graves and delivered by V Swans Development Officers, Chelsea Randall and Rikki Ryder and several guest speakers. “Women play a key part in the family unit and we hope the Yorga’s Academy will supply these girls with the skills they require to succeed in both their personal and professional lives,” said Stewart.
The program, which runs from the 13th June to the 1st August, will dovetail into the Dockers Cup, 8/9 Schoolgirls Competition and the Swans District Youth Girls Competition. “The Yorga’s Academy will boost female participation in the Swans District and provide these girls with a sustainable link to the Swan Districts Football Club,” said Stewart.
