West Coast Eagles young gun, Chris Masten swooped in to Steel Blue to help boost umpiring numbers in the Swans District. Masten put the budding umpires through their paces in a series of drills and games focused on the development of umpiring skills such as running, positioning, bouncing and throwing.

Masten was at Steel Blue in support of the ‘Umpiring is Everyone’s Business’ campaign. “We all need to support umpiring and promote the importance of umpires to our coaches and players. Umpiring is a key part of our game, the smaller the number of umpires, the lower the quality of umpires in the WAFL and AFL,” said Masten.

The Swans District is looking to dramatically increase its number of Umpires to accommodate for sustained player growth at junior club level. “We have witnessed solid growth since 2010, with new teams in the 4s, 15s and 17s, so naturally we require more Umpires to officiate our games,” said Swans District Manager, Isaac Stewart.

The Swans District Junior Football Umpire Association (SDJFUA), which trains on Wednesday’s from 6pm to 7pm at Jubilee Reserve in Eden Hill, is looking for Boundary, Field and Goal Umpires of all ages. So, if you are keen on giving Umpiring a go, the SDJFUA will provide you with the necessary tools such as, leadership, tolerance, conflict resolution and decision making, to put you on the path to becoming a potential WAFL or AFL Umpire.

“The SDJFUA provides budding umpires with quality support, mentoring and training in a friendly and positive environment,” said Stewart. If you would like to know more about becoming an Umpire in the Swans District, please contact Isaac on 0429 000 347 or istewart@swandistrictsfc.com
