Woodbridge Primary School student, Charlotte Sym knows the true meaning of being in it to win it after coming away with the spoils from the 2011 WAFC Design a Jumper Competition. Sym, who was recently announced the WA state winner, credits her victory to a 100 minute art lesson.

It is during this lesson that Sym designed the striking football jumper that would eventually be voted the state’s winning entry for the WAFC Design a Football Jumper Competition. Since February, students across WA have been busy submitting their designs for the competition, which is sponsored by Burley Sekem and the WAFC.

Students are required to design their own football jumper, by taking into account certain aspects like the school’s location, ethos and demographic. A written description of the jumper and the reasoning behind the design is also required.

It is up to representatives from Burley Sekem, the WAFC and the Primary Schools Football Advisory Committee to decide on which state and country winner gets the prize of a set of 20 jumpers. WAFC Education Administration Officer, Jen Jenaway presented the set of jumpers to Sym on behalf of Burley Sekem at a recent school assembly. SDFC player, Steve Coniglio and Swans Development Officer, Paul Godfrey were also on hand to present Sym with an SDFC Membership and a bag of SDFC footballs for her school.

The winning design features a set of train tracks pointing to one of Midland’s better known historical landmarks with the Aboriginal flag set in the backdrop, highlighting the proud Indigenous culture at Woodbridge PS. The school’s green projects are also well represented in the jumper’s design.

While Sym doesn’t play football and prefers to keep her sporting abilities confined to the netball court, she doesn’t mind having a kick on the oval with her friends. Sym looks forward to participating in the competition every year, but said she was never expecting to win, particularly in her last year of primary school.

Sym had some parting advice for 2012 participants. “Draw what you believe sums up your school into a design, such as the history of the suburb, historical landmarks, the school’s colours and what the school means to you,” said Sym. The set of 20 jumpers were on display at the school’s last Eagles Cup game, where the players took the opportunity to show off their newly minted jumpers against Dawson Park PS.
