Saturday 10 May
The Swans have gone down for only the second time this season in a heart thumping game filled with highlights and another fourth quarter bizarre occurrence. The only teams to beat the Black and White’s are the Subiaco Lions, who are on top of the ladder, and the East Fremantle Sharks, who sit on the bottom of the ladder.
The Sharks dominated the first quarter at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday with the breeze and Eagles player Brent Staker on their side. Captain, Adam Lange was the only goal kicker in the quarter for the Swans while the Sharks pushed through four goals and four behinds to lead by 20 points after the first term.
The second quarter was more hopeful for the Swans; kicking five goals to the Sharks one. It could have been six goals for the home team, but ex Collingwood player Leith Teakle took a spectacular mark in the Swans goal square preventing the major score from following through. A good play from a quick Geappan handpass to Lange resulted in a major score on the board, while Davis showed promise at the other end of the oval stopping the Sharks from kicking goals. By the end of the first half the Swans were narrowly in the lead by four points.
Swan Districts 6. 6 (42)
East Fremantle 5. 8 (38)
The third quarter started and so did the rain, but only long enough to make the ground slippery and put Sharks player McCarrey off his game and miss a goal; while debut player Dominic Foster kicked his first goal and put his team back in the lead. Wolfenden was active in the quarter stealing the ball for the Swans possession and kicking to Garlette which resulted in the only goal for the team in the third term. McKinnlay was also a key team player in the quarter with six disposals including a direct kick to Geappen, but only went through for a minor score. It was a disappointing turn around for the Swans ending the third term 29 points down.
A strong start in the final quarter and Ames was playing hard to get the ball into the Swans possession and within four minutes had assisted Simpson and Krakouer with a goal each. However, at the five minute mark there was a heavy collision between Sharks player, Robert Young, and field umpire, Adam Beavis. Medical staff and trainers appeared from all directions and eventually carried the umpire off the oval. When the play resumed with one field umpire down, the Swans had lost their momentum. Taylor tried to lift their spirits with a snap kick on goal and a sliding Cricket catch from Ames also resulting in a major score, but it was not enough to win back the match. East Fremantle slowed the last part of the game down by chipping the ball through the back line to hold onto their lead and go on to win for the first time this season.
Final Score:
Swan Districts 11. 14 (80)
East Fremantle 13. 15 (93)
