Onslow Primary Students Get Active After-School
Thursday, 10th November 2011
Last term was Onslow’s introduction to the Active After-School Program. The Active After-school Communities program is a national initiative that provides primary school-aged children with access to free sport and other structured physical activity programs in the after-school time slot. V Swans co-ordinates and coaches the program here in Onslow, which not only provides afternoon activities, but also a healthy snack for the participants.
Kids have had a blast in the first few weeks of term playing games and learning the basic skills of indoor soccer and volleyball – while being able to let loose during the multi-skill day on Wednesday’s, which includes a variety of dynamic games to take part in.
All activities have been taking place in the air conditioned sanctuary of the multi-purpose centre, but Wednesday’s location will change as of next week. Teachers at Onslow Primary have begun a Homework Club to assist the students in their education after school, so in hopes of providing extra incentive for kids to study, we will run the program immediately after school finishes on school grounds – and keep the kids active until Homework Club begins.
The first few weeks have been great, and we look forward to the rest of an action packed term!
