Young Coaches Pilot Program Tips Off
Thursday, 17th November 2011
For the last few weeks of school term, V Swans are piloting the Young Coaches program before establishing it year-round in 2012. The program entails coaching, officiating and game management education sessions being delivered to Onslow High School students during their Phys Ed period – followed by a hands-on practical experience for them, as they coach and run the Upper Primary Structured Sports competitions.
The high school students have shown a great response in the sessions for the past two weeks, stepping outside of their comfort zones and willingly communicating and demonstrating amongst their peers. Impressed PE teacher Iain Freeman noted “This is awesome – I can’t believe the kind of response you’re getting. They’re really getting involved, and they’re picking it up so quickly too.”
Students took the next step in the program yesterday, coaching their first session of basketball to the Upper Primary students. After a shaky start, Young Coaches participants really found their feet and did a tremendous job in helping lead the session.
Upper Primary will be competing in a short course 3 on 3 basketball league – so after allocating teams and deciding on names (the Hornets, Titans, Wolverines and Shooters are ready for action), coaches led their teams in instruction throughout dribbling drills and shooting competitions.
Games start Saturday morning at 10 am, with both players and coaches anticipating tip off at the MPC.
