Twenty-eight talented footballers will be heading to Hedland this weekend to commence three days of skills sessions, fitness tests and educational sessions as part of the AFL State Academy program. The program will allow young men from across WA’s North West region to be developed within the regional area at the highest level with the program replicating that of the programs here in Perth as part of the AFL national talent development programming.
The partnership program between the AFL, WAFC, V Swans and Garnduwa will see athletes coming in from town’s right across the state, including Halls Creek, Kununurra, Broome, Port Hedland, Tom Price, Karratha, Wickham, Newman and the Gascoyne.
The 15 and 16 year old boys will be arriving on Sunday 22nd, with an Introduction to the Academy presentation to set the scene for this and the remaining three camps to be held across the North West in the coming months.
It is anticipated that at the culmination of the camps, a North West representative team will head to Blacktown Olympic Park, Sydney, to compete at the 2012 NAB AFL Under-16’s Championships in July this year, where players will be under close scrutiny by talent scouts and AFL representatives from around the country.
