Western Australia’s State 16s squad departed for New South Wales yesterday, Wednesday, July 1 to compete at the NAB AFL National 16s Championships.

The squad includes;

Jacob Burnham, Captain

Stephen Coniglio, Vice Captain

Brandon Erceg, Vice Captain

Josh Kirkup

Callum Jacobs

Alex Howard

Tyson Hodge

Being played at the new $40m Sporting and Football complex in Blacktown from July 4 to 11, the Championships will put Australia’s brightest young talent on centre stage for eight days of competition, with the top Division One teams to clash in a curtain-raiser to the AFL Grand Final in September.

WA reached last year’s Grand Final but lost by seven points to Victoria Metro in a tight and entertaining contest. West Australian Football Commission High Performance Coordinator Raff Guadagnino said the State 16s were confident of doing well again this year, with the talent pathway being wholeheartedly embraced by the WAFC.

“I think this will be one of the strongest sides we have ever taken to the championships,” Guadagnino said.

The Swan Districts Football Club is pleased to announce the signing of young 19 year old ruckman Rhys Peedle.

Peedle joins the club from the Perth Demons, where he has had a distinguished junior career, highlighted by State 18s selection in 2008 and representing Perth in last year’s Colts Grand Final against Swan Districts. He was also honoured with selection as the starting Ruckman in the 2008 WAFL Colts Team of the Year.

'Hurrikane' NAB AFL Auskicker of the year - Round 10

Upper Swan Auskicker Kane ‘hurricane’ More won the nation-wide NAB Auskicker of the Year for round 10.

His prize is a trip to the AFL grand-final where he will experience the Grand Final parade, watch the game, play at half time and present a medal to a player of the winning team.

Kane’s father and Upper-Swan Football Club vice-president Hamish More said Kane was overjoyed when he got the news on the Monday before round 10.

“He just couldn’t believe it, he didn’t think it was possible.

“He’s pretty happy about it, he’s still smiling about it I think,” Mr More said.

The once in a lifetime opportunity will be enjoyed by 21 Auskickers from around the country.

Mr More said Kane would love playing and presenting medals in front of an 80,000 strong crowd.

“He’s that sort of kid, he’s not that shy. He is quite bold and so he’s known as ‘the hurricane’ by a lot of the kids.

“I think he also probably likes the attention a fair bit,” Mr More said.

The NAB Auskicker of the Year has run for two years now and Kane is the second Swan District area Auskicker to be sent to the AFL Grand Final.

Smarter than Smoking District Development Officer Matthew O’Donnell said NAB had done a great job of promoting the game and providing incentives for young footballers.

“NAB have had some great wins with regard to their Auskick advertising, and when it is timed correctly it has really impacted on participation levels... in particular when ads run during the pre-season.”

Mr O‘Donnell said for kids to be in with a chance of winning this competition they simply need to join their local Auskick centre and can do this by visiting http://www2.aflauskick.com.au/and completing the online application or by calling their local Auskick Coordinator.
