Round 5 Preview v East Fremantle

Friday, April 27, 2018 - 4:24 PM by Chris Pike

SWAN Districts is back home at Steel Blue Oval this Saturday determined to return to the WAFL winner's list up against an equally desperate East Fremantle.

Swans began the season in tremendous form with wins against Perth and Peel Thunder before losing the past two weeks to Subiaco and West Perth.

That leaves the black-and-whites with a 2-2 record and in fifth position on the WAFL ladder heading into Saturday's contest with East Fremantle at Steel Blue Oval.

While Swans enter the game with plenty of determination to respond to the losses the past fortnight to the Lions and Falcons, there's no delusion that the Sharks will also be coming to Bassendean full of motivation.

East Fremantle had high hopes of being great improvers in 2018 after winning just three matches in 2017, but so far things haven’t quite gone to plan.

The Sharks did narrowly beat Perth by seven points in Round 2, but either side of that have lost to Peel Thunder by 15 points, Claremont by four points and then last Sunday to South Fremantle by 94 points.

It has been a fascinating recent history between the two clubs too with East Fremantle thrashing Swan Districts by 61 points in Round 23 last year at Steel Blue Oval despite the Sharks winning just three games for the year and Swans going on to play finals, and win an elimination final.

Prior to that, Swans did win the other two meetings against the Sharks in 2017 while East Fremantle won both games in 2016. Before that, East Fremantle won three straight over 2014 and 2015, after Swan Districts won three on the trot over 2013 and 2014.

Since Swans won five straight against the Sharks between Round 9, 2009 and Round 14, 2010, the two teams have met on 17 occasions with Swan Districts winning seven of those and East Fremantle 10.

Coming off the team that lost to West Perth last Saturday during Anzac Round, Brad Fullgrabe, Albert Dean and Jacob Coniglio have been added to the squad for Swan Districts for the clash this Saturday with East Fremantle.

The trio all played well in the reserves for Swans last Saturday against the Falcons with Coniglio gathering 16 possessions, Fullgrabe finishing with 10 disposals and seven marks, and Dean 17 touches, six marks and two goals.

Grab the clan and head to Steel Blue Oval this Saturday to witness the Swans take on the Sharks and soak up the local footy atmosphere.

The Swans Kids Playzone will be in full swing once again with heaps of fun activities planned for the little ones including bouncy castles, face painting, handball targets and much more!

The club is also giving away 50 mini Swans footies, which the league players will kick into the crowd as they run out onto the ground.

There will be a handball competition at quarter-time of the league match and then at half time the 'Bin It, to Win it!' competition will take place with a $100 prize up for grabs for the first person to kick the footy into the bin.

2 FOR 1 SPECIAL OFFER - Swan Districts are running a 2-for-1 entry offer for all local resident with the 6054 postcode, this also includes a free pie and slushie.

The match will be broadcast from 2pm on ABC Radio, HFM (107.3FM) and Footy Radio.

Meanwhile, the colts contest will take place between Swan Districts and East Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval from 12.30pm on Saturday.
