New Recruits Showing Their Worth On And Off The Field
An impressive off-season recruiting drive has seen five new Swans make their way to the club for the 2020 Optus WAFL Premiership Season.
Local talents Nelson Waite and Jacob Sideris have come across from East Perth and Claremont respectively, along with three key signings from the Northern Blues; Frank Anderson, Deven Costigan and Sam Fisher.
Waite averaged over 22 possessions and two tackles in his 6 league games for the Royals and looks primed to spend some time in the Swans midfield.
After a narrow 6-point defeat in last year’s Reserves Grand Final, former Tiger Sideris is an exciting talent looking to take his game to another level.
Anderson joins the club after a strong showing in the VFL. With suspension and a shoulder injury hampering part of his 2019 season, he finished third in the Blues Best and Fairest after just 12 games and was invited to participate in the Victorian State Combine.
Costigan can play in multiple positions on the ground and brings great experience from both a VFL and Country League perspective.
Exciting forward/midfielder Fisher comes with a wealth of knowledge under his belt. A former Sydney Swans rookie listed player, he spent the past two seasons under the direction of Collingwood and Gold Coast 200 gamer, Josh Fraser, and Essendon midfield star, Brent Stanton. Rewarded for his exceptional season, Fisher was named in the 2019 VFL Team of the Year on the half-forward flank.
Coach Adam Pickering says it is exciting to see the talent and knowledge his new recruits have brought with them from their previous clubs.
“The way they go about their footy and their preparation and training standards, it’s first class.
“Their voice and their instruction and direction to our young squad has been terrific.
“A couple have been in rehab, but they’ve lifted the standards and professionalism in there.
“We’re just hoping that reflects on the field with some wins”.
