Good Friday Wrap Up
It was a ‘not so Good Friday’ for the Swans Districts League and Colts sides in Round 1, as the apparent opening game curse continued for the fifth straight year in a row, after a Royal defeat at the hands of East Perth at Leederville Oval.
The Reserves however were able to notch up a big win, with their percentage seeing them currently sitting atop of the WAFL ladder.
Check out the breakdown of each game below…
Colts
Last year’s Premiers were under the pump by East Perth from the opening bounce. Conceding 10 scoring shots to their opponents in the first term, the black and whites’ day could have been all but over at quarter time. Kicking two goals and eight behinds, inaccuracy in front of goals for the Royals saw them just six points ahead at the first break.
The home side kicked straighter in the second, adding another four majors, while keeping the Swans goalless. 27 points was the difference going into halftime.
The young Swans settled into the game in the third. They were able to add some scoreboard pressure and close the gap to just 14 going into the final term.
Held goalless for the second time in the game, the home side were able to run away with the victory, taking the win EP 11.11 (77) to SD 6.10 (46).
Goals: 3 - D Hirst, 1 - A Brock, L Blurton, C Skeen.
Best: M Durack, D Jones, A Laurisson, B Jones, T Smith.
Reserves
It was anyone’s game in the first quarter, with a new-look Reserves side packed with exciting former Colts players ready to put their hand up to play League footy.
Trailing by seven points at quarter time, it could be seen that although there were some nerves out on the field, the black and whites looked ready to pounce and take the game into their own hands.
Putting pressure on the East Perth forwards caused them to be inaccurate around goal, seeing the Swans take a narrow 3-point margin into the main break.
An impressive eight goal haul in the second half, while limiting their opponents to just two majors saw the Swans take the convincing 38-point win, EP 6.9 (45) to 13.7 (83).
Max Chipper showed why he was the 2021 Colts best and fairest, amassing a game high 30 disposals and four tackles.
Goals: 3 - W Wilson, 2 - K Hughes, 1 - B Morris, J Ugle, J Cox, A Cartwright, B Hewett, E Bashemule, E Kane, E Bolton.
Best: A Cartwright, M Chipper, B Hewett, T Raynor, K Hughes.
League
A five-goal haul from Brayden Noble was not enough to get his side over the line at Leederville Oval on Friday afternoon.
In a tight opening quarter, nothing could divide either side, with scores all tied up at the first break.
Doubling their own score in the second, East Perth capitalised on their opportunities, heading into the main break with a two-goal lead.
The Swans went on a role in the third. They kicked four goals, and even took the lead late in the quarter, before the Royals capitalised to go five points up, setting the scene for a blockbuster last term.
Outscoring their opponents in the fourth, the black and whites again regained the lead with less than 10 minutes left in the game. East Perth responded with two quick goals late. The Swans added another shorty after, to close the gap to just four points, before time ran out for the black ducks, going down EP 12.7 (79) to 11.9 (75).
In a good showing from the Swans off season recruits, Tobe Watson had 20 disposals and 6 tackles, Will Collins collected the ball 13 times with 10 marks, Jarvis Pina had 27 possessions and 7 inside 50s, and Ryan Kemp kicked 3 goals from his 19 touches.
Goals: 5 - B Noble, 3 - R Kemp, 1 - T Watson, A Clarke, N Ireland.
Best: B Noble, R Kemp, J Pina, J Turner, N Ireland.
