Swan Districts' WAFLW Leadership Group for 2023
Not only has Jess Cox been reappointed for a second straight season as captain of the Swan Districts WAFLW team, but she is supported by vice-captain Demi Liddle, deputy vice-captain Naomi Baker with Eliza Gelmi and Jaime Henry helping round out the leadership group.
The WAFLW season for Swan Districts began against Peel Thunder in Mandurah with Cox, Liddle and Gelmi all part of that narrow league defeat while Henry was part of the Rogers Cup victory earlier in the afternoon.
Cox put together an outstanding performance to open the new season for Swan Districts where she finished with 28 possessions, eight tackles, five marks and six entries inside the forward 50.
Meanwhile, Liddle put in a strong showing for Swans against Peel as well to open the new campaign with Gelmi also finishing with seven possessions and two tackles.
Cox had a strong first season as captain of Swan Districts and was a clear choice to be skipper again in 2023, but she has strong support and that includes Liddle as vice-captain as a former West Coast Eagles AFLW player and a two-time WAFLW premiership player with Peel Thunder.
While she was part of that WAFLW Grand Final win for Peel against Swan Districts two years ago, she is now committed to attempting to help Swans to their first premiership in the competition and to become a triple flag winner.
Baker is another player on the rise at Swan Districts and was a natural to be part of the leadership group as deputy vice-captain. She had a standout 2022 season on the back of playing for Western Australia in 2021 as part of the AFLW Under-18s Championships.
She will look to continue to develop both her game and leadership abilities throughout the 2023 season with Swan Districts as will fellow leadership group members Gelmi and Henry.
Cox is proud to be captain at Swan Districts again for 2023 but knows she can't do it without the strong support of those around her.
"We always look to the positives in life and how to be even better, so that flows into our 2023 for us," Cox said.
"I’m really positive on the work we have put in together and the special aura we are creating at the club. I believe our team we will always be a candid as we continue to improve and seek challenges, which is something we thrive on.
"Pre-season has been really authentic this year. The tone by the girl’s has been set from the start, everyone came into preseason with the mindset to work hard and commit to the process.
"The leadership group came together and arranged an overnight camp filled with team bonding games, footy fun and education which was a great success and loads of fun. The camp was a perfect opportunity to establish what our club values look like, feel like and sound like to us a group."
