Renovated Changerooms
The men’s changerooms have had a well-overdue face lift during the off-season. The carpet has been replaced, the rooms painted, new modern lockers installed and the walls enhanced with historical memorabilia. This follows the showers being renovated last year. With donations provided by the Past Players & Officials Association and The Swansmen, the rooms have a modern look but retain the heritage of 90 years of playing history. The league players gave up their time during pre-season to prepare and repaint the walls and ceilings.
The old black & white lockers have been in existence for over 60 years and featured the names of players who had played 100 games for the Club. The lockers were showing their age, were too big for the area, unsecure and did not provide an individual locker for the 65 players in our league and reserves squad. The 70 new lockers have personal combination locks and still honour the heritage of those players who have played 100 games. In addition, next to the name is a Premiership Cup signifying having played in a league premiership as well as a Swans badge if that player went on to play 200 games.
The eight winning premiership teams now each feature on a special display board with the team named in position and details of the grand final. There is room on the wall for the next winning team(s). Over the next month, a large board will be installed featuring all 1,135 players who have played a league game since 1934. As players make their league debut, their name will be added to the board.
It is recognised that the old lockers will be a significant and once in a life-time piece of Swans sporting memorabilia. Apart from keeping a couple for the club archives and museum, the remaining lockers have been secured and will be individually auctioned at the annual club Swansmen’s auction in August. Start saving now for your favourite players locker, as the demand and bidding will be intense.
