West Coast has today secured Adrian Hickmott as the club’s new development coach, replacing Justin Longmuir who was earlier this season promoted to assistant coach in the wake of Peter Sumich’s departure.
The former Geelong and Carlton player already has ties to the club, having played against West Coast in the 1994 grand final and being coached by John Worsfold during his two-year tenure as an assistant at Carlton in 2000 and 2001.
Retiring at the end of 2003 with 184 AFL games to his name, Hickmott moved into coaching, initially with TAC Cup side Gippsland Power in 2007, before becoming development coach at Essendon. After three years in this role, Hickmott moved west to coach the Swan Districts colts side in the WAFL competition.
West Coast football operations manager Neale Daniher said Hickmott will be a great asset to the club.
“Adrian has previous experience in the AFL system and has done a wonderful job locally with the Swan Districts in the development area, building a great rapport with the younger players,”
“He has a great insight into the WAFL system and we are looking forward to Adrian working closely with the younger members of our squad.”
Swan Districts football operations manager Phil Smart said Hickmott’s relationship with the younger players was one of his many strengths.
“When school finished, the boys would be lining up outside Adrian’s office to have a word, which is a great thing,”
“His rapport and communication with the players is a real positive, and his work ethic and diligence in regards to looking after the development of our younger players has been fantastic.
“It’s great for our club to have an AFL team look at one of our coaches and he goes to West Coast with our blessing.”
In response to his appointment, Hickmott said he was enthusiastic about working with the club’s young list.
“West Coast has a healthy, young squad and I am looking forward to joining the club in this capacity,”
“What the club managed to achieve last season was remarkable and I think this squad has a bright future.”
Hickmott will officially commence with the club next week.
