SWAN DISTRICTS ANNOUCE NEW LEADERSHIP GROUP

E-mail Print PDF

Swan Districts Football Club (SDFC) has boosted its leadership group for the 2010 season with the addition of Brett Robinson, Tim Geappen, Tallan Ames and Ben Colreavy.

The four will join Wayde Twomey and Matthew Spencer, alongside newly announced Captain, Josh Roberts.

All seven players were brought into the leadership group with an eye to the future as they are young enough to be involved with the Club as leaders for a number of seasons beyond 2010. Senior Coach, Brian Dawson said, “They have the experience and necessary leadership qualities to strengthen the Club… There is an expectation, on our part, that they can continue to evolve in their respective leadership roles and put their own stamp on the group going into the future.”

The new group is expected to push the team and the club toward greater success in 2010 after losing out to Subiaco in last year’s preliminary final.

Football Manager, Matthew Peach said, “The installment of these seven players as leaders within the football club is certainly reflective of a more hardnosed approach we will have to our premiership campaign in 2010.

“Their combined experience will provide the club with an example of how we want to be perceived both on and off field. Whilst we expect that our entire playing group take on a leadership role over the course of the year, these seven players will certainly drive our direction as a playing group and as a football club over the coming seasons.”

Dawson said, “The leadership group bounce off each other well, on and off the ground, and we look forward to what they will bring to the playing group this season.”

Riggio wants midfield role at Swans

MATT Riggio decided to come to Swan Districts rather than return to Peel Thunder after his AFL career with North Melbourne ended, and he's hoping to become a regular midfielder for the black-and-whites.

Riggio played 10 games in his four years in Melbourne with the Kangaroos after being picked up in the 2005 draft from Peel Thunder, and while he did show some good signs that he could play at the top level, he wasn’t in the plans of new coach Brad Scott.

He certainly then was in the plans of Swan Districts, Peel and other WAFL clubs, but in the end decided Steel Blue Oval was where he'd call home in 2010.

NEW Swan Districts recruit Tom Roach finally made the big call to move to Western Australia in 2010 and he has no doubt the game style of the WAFL will suit him perfectly.

Roach, the son of former Richmond champion goalkicker Michael, comes to Swans after himself playing 11 games with the Tigers between 2004-06 and since has become a two-time VFL premiership player with North Ballarat.

He wanted to finish his university studies before leaving Melbourne despite offers each year from clubs in the WAFL, and now that he has his human movement degree he made the move and is glad to be at Swan Districts.

STEEL BLUE HOUSE PAYS OFF FOR JETTA

 By Chris Pike

LEWIS Jetta was the most exciting prospect to emerge in the WAFL in 2009 with Swan Districts and he would not be in the AFL with the Sydney Swans had it not been for the Steel Blue House.

Jetta moved to Perth from Bunbury at the start of 2009 along with older brother Graham to play league football at Swan Districts, and they lived in the Steel Blue House, which provides for young players to move to Perth to further their education, work and football.

The house is also especially designed to offer residence for students from the Pilbara and WA's south to Perth and not only have Lewis and Graham played league football as a result, have set themselves up off the field.

Lewis did his first year of turf management at Guildford Grammar, while Graham, 23, is employed by Australia Post.

The previously known Swan's Nest House has just been named Steel Blue House with club major sponsor Steel Blue securing the naming rights. Steel Blue's sales general manager Ross Fitzgerald is delighted to be involved in such a worthy initiative.
