The partnership between the V Swans, Town of Port Hedland, Sports Medicine Australia and Department of Sport and Recreation proved to be a huge success following the completion of a Level 1 AFL Coaching Course and a Sports Taping Course.
Delivered at Colin Matheson Oval on Thursday, 18 people took the opportunity to enhance their skills by either receiving their Level 1 AFL Coaching accreditation or learning the fundamentals of Sports Taping to assist in the prevention of injury.
Sports Medicine Australia’s Dana Pimley said that the Sports Taping course is dedicated to providing volunteers working with sporting teams the knowledge to help reduce injury. “In an effort to ensure those working with sporting teams are appropriately equipped to reduce the likelihood of injury, the Sports Taping course provides attendees with the basic level of training to ensure a safer environment for all participants.”
A benefit for the participants of the Sports Taping course is the Recognition of Prior Learning for the attainment of the Level 1 Sports Trainers’ course, which will hopefully be delivered in the Pilbara later in the year.
“The response rate to these courses has been overwhelming,” Bec Pianta, Business Development and Events Manager with the V Swans said. “With 9 additional Level 1 AFL Coaches now available in Port Hedland, and 9 other participants’ one step closer to attaining their Level 1 Sports Trainers Certification, the call for this type of training is obvious. It also highlights the altruistic nature of people in the Pilbara; everyone up-skilled tonight is doing it to benefit others in the community.”
The Town of Port Hedland’s Club and Project Development Officer Sarah Cunningham indicated that the partnership between the four organisations to deliver these courses allowed them to be offered to community members for free. The support and dedication from each organisation meant that value-packed and high quality courses were able to be delivered to improve community knowledge and awareness of coaching, injury prevention, body insurance and duty of care.
V Swans Regional Manager for the Roebourne Region Clint Degebrodt said these courses being offered are just the beginning. “There will be another course offered here in Hedland on the 19th March, and others are being offered throughout the greater Pilbara over the next few months. If all courses have similar numbers as these two have had, the benefits to the Pilbara and sporting clubs will be enormous.”
