On Monday 18th July the V Swans Yorga’s Maali Academy were greeted with special guests from Nutrition Australia who came out to the PCYC in Midland.
This week’s session was all about ‘Nutrition and Healthy Eating’. Nutrition Australia first greeted the girls with a quick presentation on what it meant to eat healthy, the benefits and that it’s not always about dry vegetables, eating healthy can taste great too. The girls were asked in a group discussion what they thought defined the terms healthy eating and nutrition, many various suggestions were given.
Once they finished their discussion the girls each had to look at a cereal box, where they were educated on how to read the Nutrition Information Label, an important but simple tip. Some interesting facts came about their favourite cereals and what they need to look for when shopping with parents or by themselves.
Soon enough the girls were up at the cooking station, making healthy rissoles from scratch, cutting up onions, grating carrots and practising the correct technique using the knife for each vegetable, the girls loved mixing the ingredients together by hand, teaching them that cooking can be fun and so easy. The excited girls were full of laughs, sharing their messy hands with everyone. Next they mixed peaches, strawberry yoghurt and nuts together in a cup which became an amazing and simple desert.
The girls were very pleased with their efforts at the end of the day, after making small kebabs, rissoles, and a sweet desert, they were full to their belts and took some more food home to show off to their families as well as all the information they had learnt.
The Yorga’s Maali Academy’s next session at the PCYC is going to be their last session of the program, adding a bit of fun, and boosting their self esteem, the girls get to engage in a beauty therapy session, take some goodies away with them as well as some new hairstyles and make up tips.
