Swan Districts vs Perth Demons – WAFL preseason games
The Swan Districts Football Club had their final hit out against the Perth Demons at Mineral Resources Oval on Saturday 11th July, prior to the commencement of the 2020 Optus WAFL Season proper.
The Colts opened the day with a tight 7.7 (49) to 6.14 (50) victory. After Perth started fast, teams could not put each other away, with the game rarely blowing out any further than a two-goal lead.
With plenty of supply into their forward 50, the Swans struggled to convert in front of goal, almost kicking themselves out of the game.
Zane Trew was strong in the congestion, breaking through tackles and feeding the ball out to team mates all day. Ty Sears almost had a goal of the year contender, running from half back, taking 5 bounces along the wing and kicking accurately on goal, before it was called as touched on the line.
With just over a minute on the clock, Ayden Cartwright was able to live every players dream, kicking the winning goal to see his team get up by a point.
The Reserves first quarter saw them dominate stoppages around the ground but were unable to capitalise on the score board.
Recruit Jacob Sideris found plenty of the ball while Cameron Yukich crashed packs and showed strong hands in the second, as the Swans kicked five unanswered goals to take a comfortable lead into half time.
Just when it looked as though they were going to blow the game wide open, the Demons went on a scoring spree, holding the Swans to just two behinds for the entire second half, going down to Perth 12.11 (83) to 9.6 (60).
It was a case of déjà vu when the League side took to the field. A hotly contested first quarter kept the teams close.
They too kicked five answered goals in the second, heading into half time with a 34-point lead.
Perth came out strong in the third, limiting the Swans scoring while piling on a barrage of points to close the gap.
With the game tied early in the fourth, with Perth taking the lead for the first time all day, it was the Swans experience in the middle that saw them take back control to win it 10.10 (70) to 12.6 (78).
Be there at Steel Blue Oval next Saturday to see the Colts, Reserves and League sides take on West Perth in Round 1.
