Reserves Semi Final Match Report v West Perth
Swan Districts is the first team into the Reserves Grand Final for 2023 after producing a standout performance to beat minor premiers West Perth by 26 points in Sunday's second semi-final.
The Swan Districts reserves finished the season in second position just behind West Perth before opening up the finals series defeating Subiaco by 23 points last Saturday in the qualifying final.
It was back to Leederville Oval again on Sunday for the second semi-final with a spot in the Grand Final on the line. Swans took charge from the contest early kicking the opening four goals and were never seriously threatened.
Swan Districts went on to claim the 9.11 (65) to 5.9 (39) victory to book in a place in the Grand Final which will be played at Optus Stadium on Sunday September 24.
Swans can sit back with the week off now while West Perth and Subiaco do battle in the preliminary final this coming Sunday at Mandurah's Lane Group Stadium.
Ayden Cartwright ended up kicking two goals in the win for Swan Districts to go with 18 possessions and nine marks with Tom Smith also kicking two goals from his nine kicks to go with five marks and hit outs giving Matthew Germs some support in the ruck.
Germs finished the game with 32 hit outs and 13 possessions while Lawson Humphries continued his brilliant form on the back of what he did at league level in the back end of the season. He ended up with 31 touches, nine marks and seven inside-50 entries.
Mitch Bain was also terrific in the midfield for Swan Districts with 28 possessions while Jiah Reidy collected 25 disposals, Lewis Tester 24, Ben Hewett 20, Tarir Bayok 20, Max Chipper 19 and Jacob Sideris 17.
Swan Districts came out dominating the start to the game and after five minutes kicked the first goal of the contest courtesy of Lewis Zolnier-Owens.
Tom Smith soon added another and that gave the black-and-whites the only two goals of the first quarter and five scoring shots to one to take a 14-point advantage into quarter-time.
It took less than a minute of the second quarter for Swans to add the third goal of the game as well courtesy of Kristian Caporn. Five minutes later and Ayden Cartwright added another and Swans were well in control with four goals to nil to lead by 27 points.
West Perth eventually got its first goal of the game at the eight-minute mark of the second quarter thanks to Zarne Robis but Swans responded with goals to Ben Hewett and a second to Cartwright to open up a 33-point advantage.
West Perth did get one back just before half-time through Luke Foley but it was still Swans in control leading by 26 points.
It took more than 12 minutes for the first goal of the second half and it did go the way of West Perth thanks to Luke Reilly, but Swans responded through Tarir Bayok and as a result were still in control leading by 28 points at three quarter-time.
Swan Districts then put the result beyond doubt with the first two goals of the last quarter courtesy of Brodyn Fitzgerald and Smith before going on to win by 26 points and book in a place in the Grand Final at Optus Stadium on Sunday September 24.
